The Philter S/T Album Review

The Philter is a great band. Immediately right off the bat this band get's you hooked with, "It's Over." The band has elements of shoegaze, chillwave, and surf rock. It mostly pays homage to surf bands such as The Ventures and Dick Dale while at the same time being as catchy as the Raveonettes. The Philter consists of three people at the moment. Nik, Kim and Justin. Nik plays guitar. Kim Plays Bass. Justin plays the drums. The cool thing about this band is that when they were first starting out they only used a drum machine to write all of their drum parts. This shows a ton of dedication to me and makes the album better in my eyes. In Fact, they did not have a live drummer on this album. The Drum Machine used on this album was a real Boss 202 drum machine. Most of the lyrics on this album are pretty easy to understand and you can take what you will from them. Nik does a good job of being clear on the mic but also having a nice amount of reverb in the mic while playing. I don't have any problems with the songs. I wouldn't say this is a perfect album but it's pretty damn close. An album done 100% by the band on their time, released where they wanted to release it and etc. I can't think of a better way to put out a debut album. I highly recommend picking up a copy.

I did a short Q/A with The Philter about the release and this is what they had to say:

1. When was it recorded?

This album was recorded throughout mid to late 2010.

2.Was it a studio recorded album or a home recording of the band?
If so which studio and Who produced it?

"We have a home studio so technically both. We did however want it to sound very simple. Not much in the way of professional production value and that's the way we wanted it. "

3. Describe the recording process

"This album was recorded before we had our drummer so we programed the drums in fruity loops from samples we took of a real Boss 202 drum machine. We just overdubbed guitars, bass and vocals on top of the drums. "

4. Is it on Doorway Records or Romantic Air?

"Doorway is a totally independent label i started just for personal releases. This is considered a Doorway release although we are looking into having it put out on Romantic Air. We were actually told it will come out on Romantic Air but no action yet. "

5. And lastly, What was the highlight of recording & releasing The Philter's latest album?

"The best part was/is the final product. Being able to look at a real cd with real artwork and full of what we consider to be quality music... written, recorded, designed and released by ourselves one hundred percent. Its very cool. "
