Interview w/ Inflatable Best Friend!

1.How did Inflatable best friend get it's name?
We had been trying to come up with a name for weeks and our friend Camryn suggested Inflatable Best Friend. We all looked at each other and said...."Why Not?"

2. What can you tell us about your upcoming album? (DMT Bike ride)
and how are you releasing it?

DMT Bike ride has been recorded by the Director of Production (Joe Varchola) at Kalamazoo's favorite college radio station (WIDR). We're very blessed to be under the direction of such a skilled audio engineer. Joe really knows what he is doing.

We've listened to a few mixes of songs that are going to be on the album and we've all been super impressed. The entire album is a mish mash of our own unique influences. Expect stop and go dynamics, noisy guitars, tribal drums and a surging bass guitar. The album is being released on our own record label called Obvious Records. Keep an eye out for other obvious records releases in the near future including Cartography, Brown Cow, The Scare Seasons and more....

3.Has IBF put out any releases prior to the upcoming LP?
We've released an EP that definitely needed some more polishing. We don't even play any of the songs on it anymore.
If so where can listeners find them?
(out of print EP)

4. How long has IBF been around as a band?
Inflatable Best Friend has existed as we are now since January 2010. We all made music together with other people, but it really wasn't until that point when we had the right combination of people.

5.What is your favorite place to play in Kalamazoo? Why?
Our favorite place to play in Kalamazoo is easily a house venue called "The Ant Hill". The guys that live there are in a band called 'Ackley Kid.' They're really nice and care about every single band that plays at their place.

6. Will the Painted Lady be Inflatable Best Friend's first Detroit area show?
The show at the Painted Lady will be the first time we've ever really played in the Detroit Area. We played in Ypsilanti last April, but that's about as far east as we have made it.

Musicially, what has influenced the band?
Tyler (the creator), Lightning Bolt, MGMT, Doors, Melvins, Velvet Underground, Sonic Youth, Butthole Surfers, Salvador Dali, Leonardo Da Vinci and all the other ninja turtles.

7. Describe your first tour of the midwest. How was the band recieved?
Our first tour of the midwest was one of the coolest things that I have ever experienced. Each town we went to we were meeting cool people who were nice enough to let us crash on their floor for the night. The band was very well received. Everywhere we went we played for a decent sized crowd and made lots of new friends along the way.
If you could tell me about one story from the tour that stood out, what would it be?
We played a show in Champaign, IL and couldn't find a place to sleep. We decided that we were going to stay up all night and drive to Indianapolis. We drove into the wrong part of town and a block away from a gang related shooting. Police in bullet proof vests told us to get back on the highway and get out of the general area. We were all pretty scared and tired so we decided to drink as much coffee as we could handle at a Dennys. We ended up finally falling asleep in the parking lot. It really sucked at the time, but it makes a good story to tell in situations such as these.

MARK SULTAN

"Mark Sultan has two new albums waiting to be released on vinyl in the US and beyond sometime in the fall on In The Red records out of Los Angeles, California. The two albums will be joined by a few 7" releases in the US, including a split with the Black Lips. The names of the albums are 'Whatever I Want' and "Whenever I Want', respectively, with a CD release entitled 'Whatever/Whenever' following their heels containing 7 songs from each album, 14 of a total 26. The songs are in a similar vein that he has mined of late (and for years): early rock'n'roll, psych, avant garde, free jazz, doo wop, early r&b, garage punk, punk rock, etc... thrown in a pot and simmered over his incredible vocals. Covers of such artists as Ultravox, The Stains, The Four Lords and a couple more round out the collection. Collaborators include: Choyce (Red Mass), Jared (Black Lips), Cole (Black Lips), Erin (Spits), Danny (The Gories), etc...
Mark Sultan has been a long-time fixture in the 'garage rock' scene, having played in such bands as The King Khan & BBQ Show, The Almighty Defenders (Sultan, Khan, Black Lips), BBQ, The Ding-Dongs (with Bloodshot Bill), The Spaceshits, Les Sexareenos, etc... and has released a bunch of records on labels like In The Red, Last Gang, Crypt, Fat Possum, Goner, Sub Pop, Vice, Bomp!, Norton, Sympathy For The Record Industry, etc... He has toured North and South America, Europe, Asia, Australia, Israel and everywhere in between.
He will be touring Brazil, Peru, Chile, Europe, the USA again and beyond, by years end. "

Gardens S/T Album Review

Okay here it is. First, a bit of explaining. This is the long awaited debut album of Gardens from Detroit, MI. I first interviewed them back in 2010 when I started this blog. I spoke with a band member about this album at a show and he told me it was already released at that time. I was giddy as hell and ordered it. The record was great and I listened to it many times but didn't feel I could do an accurate album review of it until now. I didn't want to sell the band or myself short. So here it is.

Gardens have put out a couple 7inches one being on Italy Records another one Just for the hell of it Records. They also have a cassette release on Telephone Explosion Records. To my knowledge, they released the two 7inches first and then Debute album followed by the cassette release. ( feel free to put these guys on discogs.com with an accurrate discography.) They also had burned cds floating around at some point in time. The self titled Gardens album was released on ALIVE NATURAL SOUND Records. It is sold through the BOMP store online. It's a Green Vinyl with album art of the band members.

The Original Gardens lineup consisted of:

Jeffrey Thomas-vocals/guitar

Julian Spradlin-precussion

Vincent Mazzola-vocals/bass guitar

Gardens added Matthew Mueller to the lineup after the Album tracks were recorded and that is why you do not see him on the album artwork.

Gardens consider themselves part of the new sound of Detroit. Gardens told me in an interview maybe more than a year ago that this album was due to be released. They had the master tracks for quite some time but it wasn't released until, May 10th-2010. Almost 9months after I spoke with them. Needless to say, I was in anticipation. The original tracks we're remastered. Their debut album was produced and engineered by Chris Koltay (Akron Family, Dirtbombs, SSM) at High Bias recordings, with Warren Defever of His Name Is Alive. After hearing the opening track I knew I was going to like this album, the guitars are loud and in your face when you listen to this record. They added more reverb on the vocals but not to the point where it sounds like Jesus & Mary Chain or the Raveonettes.

As soon as I got to the second track I could hear piano. Later in the record you will hear some organ. It was great. When I interviewed them earlier in the year I saw that very piano in Jeffrey's house. The record itself has a hint blues mixed with rockn'roll. The guitar is loud and the bass is bumping. You get the feeling of the Kinks meets the Booker T & the Mg's. While some tracks are heavy on piano/organ there are other tracks that are more primitive 3 piece rock songs. The whole album will get you singing and dancing by yourself.

The album itself sounds louder and a bit more crisper sounding than the 7inch releases but don't be discouraged because this is the same Gardens you know and love. The album was still recorded in lo-fidelity to my knowledge. Chris Koltay and Warren Defever did a really well job on engineering this album. While on some Gardens releases Jeffrey's voice may be a little more unclear you can make out exactly what he is trying to get across in this release. Keeping that in mind, there are no lyrics inside the album when you buy this. The majority of this album brought me back to when I first saw the band unsuspectingly. Discovering a great band is always a good reason to be excited. A few of the tracks on this release I hadn't heard to my knowledge but they were a pleasant suprise. Pick up a copy if you haven't already!

+plus factors in buying this release include:
Green vinyl with Free Mp3 download.
Cool artwork on back of release.
It's affordable.

Tracks to check out #1

I saw that the Beehive Recording Company was hosting a ball in November. (don't worry I'll get to that when it's closer to that moneth) and that got me spending some time on their website today. I noticed that you can directly donate on the website which is very cool. More websites should have that feature. Anyways long story short, I went to their weekly top 10 and searched through listening to some bands in there. I came across Black Tia. I really enjoy the tunes that we're put out. While only two are there they stand out. The history of Black Tia is really cool be sure to read it.

Here's the single release art.

BANDS: DUENDE/FUR/ THE BLUEFLOWERS

DUENDE! Cordially invites you to celebrate the release of their new
album FLORENCE TO THE MAD MAN on August 27th, 2011 at Small’s in Hamtramck, MI with very special guests FUR and The Blueflowers.

The album was recorded at Tempermill Studios in Ferndale, MI by
Dave Feeny (sound engineer on 2010’s EP, WAY IN IS OUT), who also mastered and mixed it with the band.
Side arms Ray Thompson (The Oscillating Fan Club) on Bari Sax and
Dustin Leslie (Dutch Pink) on Farfisa and Organ return. Jennifer David (Illy Mack) also contributes.

The album is the first to feature new member Scott Sanford (Pewter Cub) on electric bass and fuzz and acoustic guitars who joined the
band last summer just weeks before the band opened for Jon SpencerBlues Explosion at The Crofoot Ballroom in Pontiac, MI.

The photograph on the record’s cover is of Jeff Howitt’s Grandmother Erma and her friend Leona with their guitars, taken in 1939 on
Woodward Ave. in Pontiac, MI.

The album opener COME BACK contains lyrics from an unreleased
Oblivions’ song, written by Greg Cartwright. The band got permission
from the man himself to record the song; however, they set the lyrics to an entirely different and original arrangement that conveys the
influence of sharing stages with The Sadies (with and without X’s John Doe), Mike Hurt & The Haunted Hearts and Magnolia Electric Co. the
past few years.

The only other topical song is BAREFOOT BANDIT which about
modern outlaw, Colton Harris-Moore, who eluded authorities in the
Pacific Northwest for a few years before being caught in a high speed boat chase in the Bahamas after crashing a stolen plane. Otherwise,
the recordings show a band immersed in their sound and continuing to create music that is elemental, mystical in context and wildly
listenable even if normal definitions can’t compare to any given
genre.

The Rue Moor Counts

"Another Detroit child of Brian Jones, The Rue MLinkoor Counts are known as"...the rebirth of the "bring-the-house-down" rhythms and the "I-saw-God" guitar solo: a real spook-time trip for an amorphous music culture in need of a mental and cultural enema....." -Jeff Milo.

Timmy's Organism

Let's get started by saying this flyer is really good. I didn't have any part in making it but the artwork is awesome. Secondly, all the bands on this flyer are worth seeing. The lineup is solid. You have...Timmy's Organism which is a veteran Detroit band from the git-go and all these other stand up cats like MICKEY+ RAYON BEACH+JOHN WESLEY COLEMANIII. So if you're really just going to take a nap on sunday like everyone else in Michigan. Have at it but if you want to know where the cheap drinks and the happening party is on Sunday, It's at the Painted Lady.

Details:

DOORS: 9PM
COST: $7 BONES
18+

Extra info about the bands found here:

Single Barrel Detroit

These guys we're on my suggested friends on Facebook so I looked into it further and they weren't a Microbrewery from Detroit. I was a little disappointed but I got over it very quickly when I found out that they're filmmakers from Detroit that film local bands and do a very good job of it.

So what are they all about really? This video will help you understand.

what is SINGLE BARREL DETROIT? from SINGLE . BARREL . DETROIT on Vimeo.

I really like what Single Barrel is doing. It shows off Detroit how it is and it shows Detroit Music in very unique locations. It's much like how I don't like to post something on here unless it has some sort of connection to Detroit Music or Michigan. If it doesn't then I'm just another music blog and what's the point?

Anyways,

Enjoy this music video from Single Barrel Detroit

Buddy Holly Tribute

Pretty cool compilation cd/Lp. Big name bands covering Buddy Holly songs as a tribute. I thought it was pretty cool that The Detroit Cobras made it on the same record as Lou Reed and Patti Smith.

here is a more in depth article about the release:
